make that change

so, while i'm off galavanting in Chicago and in light of recent events, i thought i'd leave you this weekend with my very favorite Michael Jackson memory...

there is a small bar in Salamanca, Spain that local university students refer to simply as "the Michael Jackson Bar." the chupitos (shots) are cheap, all the specials are named after MJ songs, and a mixed drink is served a styrofoam cup the size of an American Slurpee. i ordered a "Black or White" while visiting from Sevilla for the weekend in the fall of 2003 and, while i have no clue what was in it, it was a damn good drink. after finishing my BorW, it dawned on my friend JAJ and me that there was no Michael Jackson music playing in the Michael Jackson Bar. deciding that this just wouldn't do, we began (loudly) insisting that "hombre en el espejo" be played. i think it took an hour, another BorW and a really big tip, but Man in the Mirror eventually made its way into the mix. screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs and busting out with terrible 80s interpretive dance moves, i think we might have had one of the late nights ever.

that's how i'm going to choose to remember Michael J... a musical genius appreciated by people all over the world - and by two blond Americans drinking bootlegged Spanish alcohol out of styrofoam cups in a smoky theme bar, an ocean away from home. however sad and bizarre the man behind the music became, you cannot deny his influence on the music we listen to today. or the power of Thriller.

  1. i drop everything to sing (or lip sync) along to man in the mirror whenever i hear it. i'm sad that his music was overshadowed in more recent years by his strange personal life, but i just have to break out some of my old albums to remember the real michael and remember the best things about him. genius. you're exactly right.

  2. it's a shame that the michael most people our age will remember is the freak show he became in his later years. but there's no denying he was a musical genius and his songs are amazing. i'm deciding to just turn up his tunes and remember michael in that way.

  5. I totally agree with you and Erin. Regardless of what did or did not happen in his personal life-- the music is amazing. I love being out with my girlfriends when Man in the Mirror comes on... Oh the fun times!

  6. What a great memory, thanks for sharing it. And I totally agree with you. I think I tweeted that whatever else went on, his music was amazing, and there is no denying that. Love your Thriller tribute too in Chicago.

  7. This might be the best MJ tribute I've seen, not to mention yet another example of Why Everyone Should Study Abroad.

I can't type "Hombre en el Espejo" without laughing. Well done.
