L's Daniel Tiger 2nd Birthday Party

LBug had a pretty fabulous second birthday.  We kept everything pretty low-key but celebrated with all her favorite things... friends, family, chips & dip, "debil tacos," cake, the park, and "Tigey."

We kicked off the festivities on her actual birthday {Friday, February 21} with an appetizer "fancy waffle," followed by breakfast tacos, lots of salsa, and the really good ice at Torchy's Tacos.  Then we worked in a little park time before nap.  It was a big treat to have Daddy hang out with us all morning on a workday... and equally as thrilling to have J and T-Pop appear magically after nap!

Saturday was Party Time!  We couldn't have planned a prettier day... Planning an outdoor park party at the end of February was a gamble, but we seriously lucked out on the weather!  Local Info: You can rent pavilions at any of the Dallas public parks for $30 per hour with a minimum rental of 3 hours.  The City will refund your money if bad weather precludes your use of the park... but they are a little iffy on what "bad weather" means exactly.  It seems like rain qualifies, but no one could give me a really clear answer on super frigid temperatures.

{pardon the privacy bowtie}

We kept things super simple... Basically, come after nap to snack, play, and sing Happy Birthday.  The menu consisted of chips & salsa, veggie sticks, carrots, hummus, Daniel Tiger mandarin oranges, and fresh strawberry cupcakes with strawberry cream cheese icing. We tried to be cool kids and serve beer for the adults, but a party pooper bike cop put a stop to our fun rather quickly, so we all made do with water, juice boxes, and LaCroix.  The kiddos seemed pretty interested in the food when they arrived, so we grazed and did birthday cupcakes first and then let them run off their sugar highs on the playscape.  It was such a pretty day that it was after 5 when everyone said their goodbyes.

L had a fantastic time and is still talking about her "Tigey Party at the Park."  And I had a blast executing all the little "non-craft" details... so much less stressful than The! Big! First! Birthday! Party!  I highly recommend giving Pinterest a swift kick in the pants and going this route!

Deets on the Details:
  • Invitation JPEG - Etsy Seller Samair
  • Table Cloths - Mara Mi at Target
  • Plates / Napkins / Cutlery - all leftovers from previous shindigs {one perk of having no color scheme!}
  • Felt Happy Birthday Banner - Target {can't find a link}
  • Helium Balloons - Party City {Tip: If your party is on a Saturday, order these suckers in advance and just pick them up right before to avoid a total madhouse}

  • Favor Bags - Party City {69 cents each}; I just cut out and pasted the printable tags on each bag
  • Coloring Sheets - free download from PBSKids.org
  • Crayons - Up & Up Target brand; bundled in groups of four and secured with gold pipe cleaners I already had
  • Daniel Tiger Cups - Fred Rogers Company
  • Sparkly Heart Bracelets - Target, leftover from our class valentines
  • Tiger Mandarin Oranges - I admit this one was Pinterest-inspired. I drew the little tiger faces on using a fine tip Sharpie. This really would not have taken all that long except  the natural oils on the orange skin kept gunking up the Sharpies. Tip: pressing lightly works better than bearing down.
  • Party Hats - Hats themselves from Party City.  I downloaded the free DTN character masks from PBSKids.org, printed them, cut them out, and pasted them on the hats.  This was definitely my favorite little addition to the party; I had grand plans to display them as part of the decor, but it was too windy.  No biggie; the kids got a big kick out of them anyway. And, um, I may have been a tad obsessed with them as well.
  • L's Heart Dress - the brand is Southern Sunshine Kids, and I ordered it from one of those Facebook auction shops.  I believe it was Smocked Auctions.
*I seriously cannot sing the praises of PBSKids.org loudly enough.  There are so many fun, free activities / crafts for kidlets to be found if you poke around for a bit.  Those color sheets are my new go-tos for restaurant "play packs."

ANYHOODLE, Yay for easy, "grrrrrrr-ific" birthday celebrations!

  3. What a perfect little party. My son is just about the exact same age as L. I learned about Daniel the Tiger from you! Love it for a first TV show. It makes me feel slightly less guilty when he has some TV time!
