dribble drabble

(1) Memorial Day Weekend = Success! besides burning myself to a crisp whilst listening to Lee Greenwood, a visit from my parentals' marked our first official house guests! we grilled burgers, tromped around the neighborhood, ate some delicious La Duni, and watched Super Bad (yes, Monitor and T-Man are really that cool). why we did not take pictures (curses!), i am not sure. Evs and i also saw Angels & Demons - better than DaVinci Code (movie) / not as good as either of the books / but exponentially better when enjoyed with Italian wine at the Angelika!

(2) J&K+8: i was late to the Jon & Kate + Eight Party. its just not normal to have litters of children. apologies. but then they won me over. and now... disgusted. we watched the season premier like one would rubberneck through a 1.5 hour train-wreck - wanting to flip away, but somehow unable. not sure which was more disturbing - Kate's Wannabe There's Something About Mary Coif or the fact that J&K are bigger whiners than all 6 sextuplets put together. {actual words uttered by Evs last night: "they need a Waaaaaaaah-mbulance!"} Kate: get over yourself - you chose this can 'o beans, baby - and the only reason you're cursing the spotlight now is 'cause your idiot husband got caught with his hand in the 20-year-old-bimbo-cookie jar. oh, and you're upset by the paparazzi following your kids? as opposed to the 20 camera men that live in your house on a normal basis? uh-huh, makes sense. Jon: grow a pair. yep. that's all: grow. a. pair.

(3) feed me seymour: our realtor dropped an orchid off today. i know nothing about how to care for a plant that is not related to a cactus. i am terrified of the pretty orchid. there are instructions with it that might as well have been written in Mandarin. something about nodes and spikes and liquid fertilizer and HELP.

(4) thank gawd today is already Wednesday.

  5. When you typed "feed me Seymour", did you have a flashback to the "Little Shop of Horrors" dance? Because I totally did.

  7. Angels and Demons wasn't that great in my opinion, but yes, better than DaVinci Code.

I watched the J&KP8 premiere as well and felt the same way: trainwreck. I don't like that the show has now turned from 'how we handle the every day life as parents of multiples' to 'we are only staying together for the kids/tv show and we won't even interview together to make this all extra dramatic in order to enhance ratings.' Sad.. I used to love that show.

Don't even get me started on that orchid! I can barely even keep a fern alive.. Good luck.

  8. A note on orchids...
I am notorious for killing plants. It doesn't matter how "easy" a plant is to maintain, it will die when left in my care. I also love fresh flowers. They are supposed to eventually die and I am okay with that (mainly because it's not my fault). That being said, I am on my third orchid and this one has stayed alive since February (HUGE accomplishment...the other 2 made it less than a month a piece). My fiancee saw how sad I was after killing the first 2 and he keeps replacing them. My point is...it's easy. Go to the grocery store and pick up some Orchid Food where the fresh flowers are (even Tom Thumb should have it). Fill up the sink about an inch or so with water, put the food in (however much it says on the container) and set the orchid in it. You will be fine. They only need to be watered like once a week or less...just look for the soil to be sorta dry. They are fickle as hell though. They get pissed and die if you accidentally knock a bud off or get their leaves wet. Good luck...

  10. It took me a while to get used to caring for orchids, but I've got them on a really good cycle of yearly blossoming now. That might change now that I have to repot one of them - scary new responsibility!

First of all, keep them in either an unshaded east or north window or a dappled shaded south or west window. In TX (I'm in Austin) south or west without dappled shade will be toooo much and the plant will wither.

Secondly, get orchid specific food. I use Peter's Specialties (I think I got it at Home Depot or Lowes). The brand doesn't matter - just make sure it's orchid specific - which has something called 30-10-10. (That's the nutrient ratio that's optimal for orchids.)

Thirdly, water and feed. As Sarah said, you want to make sure that they dry out in between. Really dry out - no moisture. I do this every 7-10 days in the heat of the summer and every 10-14 days the rest of the year. Before I feed, I put them in the sink and really wet them first using the hose attachment. Then I feed. I use a 1-gallon watering can and mix in food at the ratio as specified(it should say to feed a bit more during spring and summer and a bit less during fall and winter - the dormancy stage). Then I simply pour out the watering can over the orchids.

This works extremely well with Phalaenopsis, which is what you have. I have a harder time with my Dendrobiums - I think b/c I don't have the right amount of sunlight for them. So sad - but at least I get beautiful glossy leaves.

I know this was really long - but it should work. If you have any ?s, frachellea@yahoo.com Good luck!!

  11. Oh! And make sure when you water - you don't water the leaves. Only the soil. The plants don't like it when water collects in their leaf areas. But, they do like humidity. So, if you want to, you can spritz the plants every other day with a mister. You can also put the pot on a tray filled with gravel/stones and water. The gravel will hold the pot up above the water, but allow for humidity around the plant. I do this when I think about it - but my plants seem to be fine without the extra humidity. I would judge it depending upon what your home climate is like.

  12. I'm the orchid queen! The key is to just forget you have them. I put a few icecubes on their potting medium once a week or week and a half maybe. I don't mess with plant food, though I suppose it couldn't hurt

  13. Black thumb here, with nothing whatsoever to offer about the orchid. I've offed a few myself.

On the other hand, snarkery I am good at, so I will say about "J & K + 8" - hello, they signed on for media attention! It kills me when people complain about the very thing that made them wealthy. That being said, I do feel sorry for the children & understand that the fishbowl must be tricky to live in for all.

  15. oh god, i love orchids, but best of luck. i have killed three already. i think i went overboard trying to prove i could keep one alive and watered it every day...so basically i drowned it. best of luck...they are so beautiful!!

  16. j+k&8 really bother me. i'm so glad i never got into them. i completely agree with you about the "litters" of children! i'm so glad someone else thinks that way! i say that down here and people look at me like i'm crazy. i'm not. dogs should have 8 babies.. people not so much.

i watched 10 mins. the other nite and wanted to gauge my eyes out. i think i'm done with them!
