kitchen adventures, etc.

so Sunday night the CT Crew minus 1 (missed you R!) gathered at M & T's for a delectable feast + vampire hotness. seriously, i wish i had taken pictures of all the goodies that Maggie whipped up for us - it was a truly gorgeous meal (with fabulous company and delicious creatures of darkness... and cava).

anyhoo, the meal featured this quinoa dish that was fantastic! i'd never delved into the realm of quinoa cooking before and was intrigued. after procuring the recipe from M, i skipped on down to Whole Foods after work last night for all the necessities. i decided to add grilled feta/spinach chicken sausage to the mix for a sort of one-pot-meal.

i was thoroughly pleased with the entire quinoa-cooking experience, save for dropping a large fork midway through which spiraled downward like an Olympic diver performing a pencil-jump (tines first) right into the top of my foot, creating two very neat puncture wounds (i'll spare you the mini-blood-geyser details)... these might be sexy on my neck if i lived in Bon Temps but not so on my footsie when required to sport professional footwear in Dallas.

anyhoo, first aid badge earning aside, dinner was pretty darn good - although Evs was skeptical at first...

E: what exactly are we eating?
K: quinoa.
E: key-whatta?
K: quinoa - its a psuedocereal.
E: what's a psuedocereal?
K: its the seeds of a veggie that have certain qualities of a grain.
E: how do you know that?
K: i'm a foodstuff genius.
E: no, really, how do you know that?
K: i wiki-ed it.
E: what's the white stuff?
K: it may or may not be feta - eat it. you can't taste it.
E: i don't know if i like it.
K: its good for you - its related to spinach.
E: how do you know that?
K: i told you - i'm like a the goddess of nutrition trivia.
E: no, really, how do you know that?
K: i wiki-ed it.

10 minutes of thoughtful chewing later...

E: i think i like it.
K: told you.

in other kitchen news, i made my very first cappuccino this morning with our new Bialetti Mukka Glass Cappuccino Maker! i will admit, it took me two tries because you have to screw the pot onto the base much tighter than you would think, but other than that, i have not complaints!

and completely unrelated to my culinary antics, i saw the trailer for the Time Traveler's Wife last night... i was a bit skeptical when i heard the book was being made into a movie as it really is one of my favorites and its a pretty complex piece of writing. i wasn't sure how it would translate... there's a large possibility that the film could turn out cheesy but i'm a sucker for Rachel McAdams so its off to a decent start in my book (hehe, pun).

  2. hahaha... Glad you both enjoyed! Trevor has long since accepted that I think whole grains are totally hot. "I know, I know, all this nutrition... so sexy."

And as I told Kate, not only is this quinoa dish a snap to make, but it's really economical when asparagus are in season and it works great as leftovers all week long - either heated up or cold, right out of the fridge.

Also, I am very envious of your toes. My running has caused my toes to be not quite right.

  16. Ooh, I just got a Bialetti espresso maker and I was eyeing the cappuccino maker... how was the cappuccino? I also love, love quinoa. I use it in place of rice for most of the dishes I make (except gumbo... I can't mess with perfection.)
