do the wave!

for the first 24 years of my life, i was living a lie. then one trip to cabo, several margaritas, and some tomfoolery later, i can finally speak the truth:

i have wavy hair.*

you see, i grew up thinking that i had straight hair that just happened to hold curl really well. then all of a sudden i get drunk and lazy whilst prepping for a night out in Mexico, slap an unknown concoction of mousse and gel and spray on my locks, and viola! miracle of miracles: natural waves! (yes, i know - obviously the most important discovery since that whole "earth-revolves-around-the-sun-and-not-the-other-way-around-you-idiots" thing.) this really just goes to show you that important things can be accomplished with tequila shots and and a dash of sloth. so, you know, keep that in mind.

anyhoo, three years later i think i've finally perfected my wavy hair product cocktail:
  • shampoo and condition as you normally would. towel dry hair, comb through tangles, then towel dry again.
  • liberally spray a light leave-in conditioner all over head (don't forget to flip over and spray the underside of your hair as well). i use Biolage Daily Leave-in Tonic.

  • next, work a golfball-sized dallop of alcohol free mousse through your hair. i use Nexxus Mousse Plus.

  • scrunch like a mad woman.
  • blowdry with a diffuser on low, continuing with your mad-woman-scrunching skillz.
  • take pictures of your wavy 'do in the office bathroom for publication on the interwebs.

  • take a picture of your full outfit in the office bathroom because your shoes are really cute and an awesome eggplant color. notice that your skirt is kinda short for the whole "lawyer look" and realize that people will mistake you for the receptionist today.
dress: Hale Bob
cardigan: J. Crew
shoes: Jessica Simpson - at Nordstrom
earrings: J. Crew
gold cuff: Coach

note: this little combo makes for free-form waves that are soft to the touch. if you want more definition, try Redken Ringlet '07 - which is a great product but is going to make your hair a tad bit crunchy.

*you totally thought i was about to announce my secret lesbianism, didn't you? humorous use of prose, yes? suckers!

  1. well I was going to leave a comment about, among other things, Tiffs Treats and the "oh. mah. gah." jealousy I felt on learning of your impending trip to the Holy Land of wine country, sponsored by your adorable husband...but you already had a new post! Amazing.

I discovered wavy hair in the midst of puberty, along with the Backstreet Boys and the gift of a magnifying mirror and tweezers. Thank you so much for the product and styling suggestions though, as I often look like a latina wandering Highland Mall or a sweaty woman who has just been in labor for too long.

I also love your bathroom photo shoots, Jessica Simpson shoes, and identify with wearing items a little too short for work.

    Thanks for the wonderful blog!

  3. That dress is too cute! I also love your hair! When I try to scrunch it never turns out quite right!!

  4. Hmm ... I need to figure out my hair's secret identity. Right now, it's uber-long (like I can do the Lady Godiva thing where I cover my boobs with it), so it's mostly straight, with waves underneath. When it's shorter, it waves better ... but I've always just considered it annoying. Curly underneath, straight and frizzy on the top.

I guess I need to try some products and see what magic I can work, because you look ADORABLE with the waves! Also, love the outfit. :)

  5. Oh I love it. I wish I had wavy hair-- I have the awkward "Italian wave" where only one side does it. Your outfit is adorable and I love that you push the lawyer fashion lines!

  6. I have wavy hair too -- but always blow it out. My wavy hair just looks frizzy and gross. Maybe I will have to try your tips.

  7. I love the soft waves! I might need to see if my hair will do this. I'm guessing not, but you never know...
I will have to keep reading Julie/Julia. Several people have said it is fantastic.

  8. oh yes... i've got the wave plus 1,000. it's nuts and i don't even fight it in the summer.

the only thing that makes me feel normal lately is taking the 30 minutes to blow dry my hair straight... i feel like i'm going to do something great after i finish that. but really i grab the baby and go sit on the couch some more. oh well! :)

i like your product recommendations for wavy hair. i use loreal springing curls and it works pretty great, too. i have to let mine air dry or we have a disaster.

    and love the outfit!

  11. Great outfit :) I too have naturally wavy/straight hair. I use (and I know this sounds silly) Aussie Foam Mousse. I can't remember the exact name of it, but it has a light hold and creates the soft waves like your hair... and it's only $3.99 a can. I love it!

  16. It's gorgeous!! My hair has two flavors: ringlets or straight as a pin (thanks to a straightening iron). No soft gorgeous waves for me. So jealous!

And I love the bathroom photo shoots!

  18. pretty much in love with that dress. gimme?

  19. You've got some gorgeous wavy hair!! Sounds similar to my story, I didn't know my hair was wavy till my little sister showed me what to do when I was home for Thanksgiving when I was 22. I spent all those years wishing for wavy hair, who knew it was hiding under all the damage my straightener had done!

  20. I would kill for your hair. Mine is naturally straight that DOES NOT happen to hold curl well. Or at all. Yay me! Love that bracelet!

  21. I too learned late in life that I have wavy hair and I've been working on perfecting the look. In the 80's I went so far as to beg my mother for a perm, ha!!

Its summer time in the south, so what if you show a little leg. Maybe thats the reason I often get asked if I'm a lawyer and when I say yes, whatever ancient specimen of an old man then proceeds to ask me if I have in fact taken a bar exam and passed (like I don't know what it means to be a lawyer). The only joy I get in this is responding with "Yes, I am licensed in two states and took the bars at the same time, where are you in fact licensed sir?" That usually shuts them up pretty quickly no matter what I'm wearing!

  22. I used to have stick straight hair growing up. Then somewhere around puberty (what a horrible time), it got all frizzy and weird on me. Just what every 13 year old also wants to deal with! Not it's super wavy and I usually have to blow dry it straight. But I love those waves!! Your hair is gorgeous!!

  23. oh if i only had this how too this morning when my hairdryer went on to a better place, leaving me with un-defined odd looking waves.

  24. Hmmm I too am under the impression that I have straight hair that holds curl well... perhaps I will see if I can coax it into lovely waves like yours.

Also, "i take pictures in the bathroom" is probably my favorite content tag on a blog. Ever.

  26. You look so sassy!! Love the wavy hair Kate!

I wish mine would go wavy - I have the most dead straight hair in all the world and it doesn't do a thing :(

  28. I was 22 in Mexico when I learned I had wavy hair...I think our crap hotel in Acapulco that didn't have a hairdryers plus coronas did the trick, and I noticed in the pictures that I actually like the wavy look. Now it's my summertime staple!

  29. just found your blog, and I love it! Your waves look fantastic: my hair is either crazy curly or straight from my straightening iron, not pretty waves like that. And then humidity joins in the fun...I'm going to have to try some of those products and see what happens.
