its beginning to look a lot like...

So, I like Christmas.  A lot.  I like to think I like Christmas more than your average bear.  I like the food and the lights and the wreaths on every door and the parties and the scent of pine and the friends and the family and the happy hustle and bustle and the pretty paper packages and Elf and Chevy Chase and the season Starbucks beverages.

And the music.  I love the music.  Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and Elvis and the Chipmunks.  I even love that damn, catchy "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" song by stupid N'SYNC.

However.  There are two Christmas songs that bother me to no end.  I'm not talking about an annoyance a la "Santa Baby" which I can hear once and think "ooo this is sexy and fun" and from thereon out its like "PICK A NEW DEADLY SIN, WILL YA? GREED IS GETTING OLD!"

No.  These two songs bother me.  Like, really?  This is the Christmas message you meant to convey?

First up, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"... "Yay!  Happy Adulterous Holiday!  My mom is whoring it up with the Personification of the Christmas Spirit!"  The only way I can wrap my head around this one is to think that maybe Santa is really just Dad dressed up in a fat suit.  Then its more like campy home-porn... that your kids are watching.  So, yeah, still really effing creepy.

Then we have "Baby Its Cold Outside," or, as I prefer to call it "The Date Rape Carol."  I'm serious, listen to the words.  Classic Frat Boy "No Really Means Yes" / "If You Leave Me With Blue Balls, They'll Fall Off" Banter going on in this little number.  Especially the Harry Connick, Jr. / Lee Ann Womack version.   "Say, what's in this drink?"  That's the Roofies, Sweeties - grab an extra pair of mittens and RUN LIKE HELL!

Okay, Scroogeiness is complete for the season... unless you want to chat about Its A Wonderful Life (I prefer my Jimmy Stewart served with a side of Hitchcock and that line about the angels and the bells and the wings makes me want to rip my hair out).

Seriously.  I'm finished.  And for allowing me to ruin two (seriously disturbed) Christmas carols and one (seriously obnoxious) Christmas movie, here's a peak at our Holiday Decor '09!

  1. I always assumed it was the Dad dressed up as Santa for "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus"

  2. I'm so glad I'm not the only one troubled by "Baby, It's Cold Outside!" Because, damn, that song is creepy. And yet, at the same time, I love nearly every version of it-- come on, who can deny the cuteness (and simultaneous creepiness) of the Zooey Deschanel/Will Ferrell rendition in Elf?

  3. Todd and I love "Baby It's Cold Outside" but I totally think the same thing about it. Hello?! She said she wants to go home!

Your tree is precious. And I'm totally barging into your adorable bungalow next time I'm in town.

  4. Your comments about the two Christmas songs made me laugh. I do like Baby It's cold outside, but I understand what you're saying. Christmas decorations look good!

  5. Your tree is picture-perfect! Can't believe you already have wrapped gifts beneath it - impressive! I have to say, I'm such a super sap when it comes to It's a Wonderful Life. I love it. Bring on the cheese! :)

  7. Love your holiday decorations! Hope your Thanksgiving was great, despite Evs not being there. You'll have to dress up The Boom for some Christmas photos!

  8. Now that N*SYNC (the asterisk is essential, Kate) song is in my head. Dammit!

I happen to like Baby It's Cold Outside for two reasons: 1) Zooey and Will in Elf and 2) I ignore the lyrics. You're right. It is creeeee-py.

So jeal of all your decor. I want a mantle so bad. If I could have a tiny apartment forever but at least get a real mantle I could be happy. BLAH!

  9. Love the decor! Hubs and I had some major arguments this weekend involving light and ornament placement (I had to sneak some of his ugly ones to the back of the tree).

I really hate the 12 Days of Christmas- probably due to elementary school music class.

  10. Umm, I feel so far behind in the Christmas decorating. We won't be here for Christmas, so, I guess I better get decorating now to enjoy the sights while we ARE in town.

And Santa Baby gives me the creeps after the second or third time I hear it in a season. That limit has already been reached as it is my bosses "please wait while your party is reached" phone call music. Ugh.

  11. I tried to express the same thing about mommy kissing santa claus to my friend the other day... even if it is the dad, why is the kid watching? it's not exactly communicating the family christmas wholesome spirit, methinks

  12. Ok, I secretly love Baby It's cold Outside, but it is totally raunchy! I mean, how many verses can you write about a girl trying to say no!!
My nails on a chalkboard song is that chestnut song. I don't care if it is like "the christmas song", I'd rather pluck off my own fingernails one by one than listen to that song. Oh, or the little drummer boy. Rum pum pum my ass, that song is annoying! Other than that, I love Christmas. It is my all time fave and I'm so glad it's here!! Love your decor!

  13. i love all the little touches!! we're still scrooging it up at the Mojito houshold. Though, I did put out stockings yesterday. Maybe next year I'll get adventurous and buy a tree? But then I need lights and ornaments and ribbons and bows. GAH overwhelming.

P.S. I'm so sorry about work. I love you and am here if you need ANYTHING!! xoxox

  14. I think you just ruined "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for me! I had to chuckle at your comparison. Now, I will think of it every time I hear the song!

  15. "Baby It's Cold Outside" is my favorite Christmas tune! I'll never look at it the same now! ;)

I love my Sbux cup ornament too! I have to find it... I can't remember which box I packed it in when I moved... However, I do want the newest Red Cup ornament!

  16. Oh, I'm oh-so-happy to see I'm not the only bird that loves the C&B white cartoon reindeer. Yay!

I think "Have A Holly Jolly Chirstmas" is my favorite song- he sings it with a bit of sarcasm, if you listen closely.

Or maybe I'm just projecting and only desperately want to think he's singing with a hint of sarcasm.

    UmANYWAY. Beautiful decorations! :D

  17. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is DEFINITELY about the Mom kissing the Dad. Haha...

But I agree, a very annoying song regardless.
